Ecojesuit shares this article published in the first English edition of La Civiltà Cattolica, a magazine published continuously by the Jesuits in Rome since 1850 and originally available only in Italian.  For the first time, its 4000th edition is also in English, French, Spanish, and Korean, and was launched in January 2017. Pope Francis met the Jesuit writers for the magazine, and “shared with them the importance of poetry, art, and pioneering intellectual research (as frontiers) and defend not just Catholic ideas but must also witness to Christ in the world with a restless, imaginative, and open-ended spirit (as bridges).”  This article was initially featured in the Volume IV, 2016 issue of La Civiltà Cattolica with the title “I lineamenti scienza della sostenibilità.”

2015_11_30_Editorial_Photo2With joy and hope in their hearts, and openness and creativity in their minds, the Global Igntian Advocacy Network (GIAN)-Ecology entered into the second day of the Stockholm Dialogue to explore with members of the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) the relationship between scientific objectivity and social urgency inherent within what we know as sustainability science – a science that emphasises and puts into practical action the social transformation that embraces social inclusion and environmental integrity.

Since 2013 the city of Stockholm in Sweden has been closely linked to the activity of GIAN-Ecology, as it was during this year that the core group joined World Water Week, a major international event organized every year in this city.  With that meeting, we launched an action plan for 2014-2015 that articulated our activities around the theme Water for All.

GIAN-Ecology in Stockholm, Sweden

www_stockholm-277x300When the core group of GIAN-Ecology met in Chicago in November 2012 and discussed its strategy for the next two years, we considered several issues where our efforts will likely concentrate. Finally after intense and very interesting discussions, we decided that the theme of water, or even better, Water for All, will be the focus of our joint activity over the next two or three years.
