The Appalachian Institute currently coordinates over 20 immersion trips for high school and college aged students from across the region. Each trip focuses on relationship building with Appalachian communities, authentic learning on the challenges and beauties of the region, reflection based on Jesuit pedagogy, and action steps for continued connection after the immersion experience.

Lannette Booth received the West Virginia Social Action Research Award during Wheeling Jesuit University’s Student Research and Scholarship Symposium, held April 12 on the campus, for her project, “A Study of the Effects of Heavy Metals from Coal Fly Ash Contained in Little Blue Run Lake.”
Bronco Urban Gardens (BUG), an environmental justice initiative, is a partnership between Santa Clara University’s Environmental Studies Institute and the Silicon Valley HealthCorps. The goal of the program is to increase community food security, sustainability and environmental literacy in Santa Clara Country through the co-creation and technical support of urban gardens and garden education programs.
