Pollution growing concern – Jesuit research reveal

Environmental contamination, especially pollution of water sources, is causing significant concern in areas where Jesuits are based, according to a global survey conducted by the Justice in Mining Network. The survey also showed there is strong interest in mining justice issues, but indicated that many Jesuits and lay colleagues feel they have insufficient knowledge and expertise to take action.

Bringing the Light to the Margins

“Salamat kaayo sa inyong tabang” (thank you so much for your help) were the common words I heard from the residents of Sitio Calbasaan, Minglanilla, Cebu. On January 9, 2016 a team of teachers revisited Calbasaan and conducted a monitoring of the Liter of Light Devices (LLD) that were distributed to around fifty households on October 17, 2015. On the same day, SHS-AdC also donated ten boxes of children’s books and 261 “bags of love” to Calbasaan Elementary School.

Catholic Divestment Toolkit Launched

A groundbreaking new resource has been released to assist Catholic institutions in making decisions about their investments in fossil fuels. The toolkit, titled “Ethical Investments in an Era of Climate Change,” equips church leaders, financial officers, and other decision-makers to assess their investment decisions in the light of Catholic Social Teaching. It is the first global resource of its kind.

Boston College’s Student Government Calls for Divestment

The Student Assembly of the Undergraduate Government of Boston College passed a resolution calling upon the University to divest from existing funds in fossil fuel companies within the next five years. It also requests BC to immediately freeze any new or future investment in fossil fuel companies.
