Access to clean water is a life issue that the church must defend

Five years ago, few people thought of the Catholic church as ecologically activist or environmentally diplomatic. But Pope Francis’ election to the papacy changed that, especially since the promulgation of his 2015 ecology encyclical, “Laudato Si’, on Care for Our Common Home.” In my analysis, fresh water is the most important point of papal reflection at the intersection of environmental and social justice. Fresh water is, in no uncertain terms, a fundamental life issue.

Jesuit Hakimani Centre improving equity and faireness in water management in Garissa County

Jesuit Hakimani Center has been working with the select Religious Leaders, Civil Society Organizations, and Water Service Providers to improve equity and fairness in water management for communities most affected by the adverse climate in Garissa County. Severe water scarcity in Garissa County is associated with extreme climate variability and deficiencies in water governance.

International Youth Development (IYD) teaches pupils on waste management

Integral Youth Development (IYD) a Jesuit project in the Jesuit Youth Office together with Environmental Management Agency (EMA), Ministry of Education, Sports, Arts and Culture and TeamUp2CleanUp recently embarked on a Joint Schools Initiative, a five day clean-up campaign from the 25th -29th of June 2018. The program ran under the theme Sustainable Waste Management Schools Training and it focused on five primary schools in Mbare. The Joint Schools Initiative team engaged pupils on the importance of reducing consumption, recycling and re-using materials for environmental preservation using program guided scripts and mascots of popular comic characters.

Xavier Ateneo among ‘sustainable and eco-friendly schools’ in PH

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), through the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), has recognized Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan as one of the “Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools for 2017” in the country for “initiating and integrating in instruction, research, extension, and administration, programs which are environment-related in nature.”

Pontificia Universidad Javeriana’s Colombian Amazon Program: Building an open university in constant dialogue with national reality

The following video address of Fr Jorge Humberto Peláez SJ, Rector of Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia on the University’s Colombia Amazon Program was shared during the Ecojesuit meeting on 1 August with the University’s key officials and faculty and with the Conferencia de Provinciales Jesuitas en América Latina y El Caribe (CPAL) led by Fr Roberto Jaramillo SJ.  This is an important and strategic development in the University’s integral response to the call for action on the Amazonia, a region of global significance as a “lung of the planet” and whose resources and indigenous communities face massive threats of loss and displacement from agri-business pressures.
